PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Brown field hockey team (4-12, 0-6) battled Penn (6-10, 4-2) for for nearly 80 minutes, but came up one goal short, as the Quakers earned a 2-1 victory in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Franklin Field.
Penn came out to a quick 1-0 lead when Kelsey Tahan struck just 3:46 into the game. The quakers continued to dominate the first half, outshooting Brown 16-5, and earning six corners to Brown's two. However, freshman Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) made six saves to help limit the damage to just the one goal after the first 35 minutes.
Brown turned things around in the second half, earning a 6-5 advantage in shots and a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners during the final 35 minutes of play. Bruno's persistence paid off in the 55th minute when freshman Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) tallied her fifth goal of the year on one of the Bears' five second-half corners.
However, the tide turned again in overtime, as Penn earned the only two corners of the extra period and took the only four shots. Washburn had one save, before a two-on-one breakaway by Christina Ferrier and Rachel Eng led to the winning goal at 79:56.
Washburn finished with seven saves, while Penn's Alanna Butera posted six saves. The Bears return home on Saturday, November 8, to host Yale in a 12:00 noon contest. The game marks senior day for the Class of 2009: Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA), Natalie Harrington (Locust Valley, NY), Ann LeClerc (Acton, MA), Victoria Sacco (Madison, NJ), and Tess Standa (Lake Bluff, IL).
