Field Hockey Losses Hard-Fought Battle at Fairfield

Oct. 30, 2001

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Fairfield Stags scored three unanswered goals in the second half to break open a tied game and go on to defeat Brown (7-8) 4-3 in a field hockey contest on Tuesday afternoon in Fairfield, CT.

Just 8:51 into the contest, the Stags got on the board to take a 1-0 lead and head into the second half still leading by one.

However, with 1:09 expired in the second half, sophomore leading scorer Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX) tied the game at 1-1 when senior Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) and junior Ashley Wallace (Avon, CT) combined with Buza on a penalty corner for the first Brown score of the game.

No sooner had Brown tied it, than Fairfield went on a three-goal scoring spree with the three goals coming in a 12:42 span. The Stags regained the one-goal lead 1:16 after Buza had tied the game with 32:35 remaining and then scored at 24:27 and again at 19:53.

However, Brown would not surmise and freshman Evan O'Connell (Greenwich, CT) scored back-to-back unassisted goals at 13:01 and 1:57 to bring the Bears to within one, but could get no closer before the final whistle.

Freshman Kathryn Noe (Simsbury, CT) allowed two goals in 40:33, while senior Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) made two saves and allowed two goals in 29:27 for the Bears, who continue action on Saturday, November 3, when they travel to Yale for a 12:00 noon Ivy League contest.
