WORCESTER, MA - Sophomore Tacy Zysk (Walpole, MA) scored twice and freshman Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) notched a pair of assists to help lead the Brown field hockey team (4-11) to a 3-2 win over Holy Cross (5-11) on Wednesday afternoon at Hart Turf Field. Senior Victoria Sacco (Madison, NJ) also scored for Brown, netting her third goal in four games.
The Bears grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Sacco fired a direct shot off one of Brown's five first-half penalty corners just 11:27 into the game. Springmeyer earned her first assist of the day with the push out, while junior Michaela Seigo (Annandale, VA) also assisted for her second of the season.
However, 18 minutes later at 29:12, Jessie Cullen knocked home a rebound on Holy Cross' only corner of the first half to knot the score at 1-1.
Brown needed just 10 minutes of the second half to regain the one-goal lead, as Zysk scored her first of the game 10:07 into the second half. Senior Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA) passed the ball from the left side of the circle to Zysk, who chipped a shot into the right corner of the goal, give Brown the 2-1 lead at 45:07. Less than five minutes later, at the 49:12 mark, Springmeyer made a quick pass to Zysk, who shot it into the right corner, lifting the Bears to a 3-1 lead.
With less than six minutes to go in the game, at the 64:22 mark, Courtney Callahan chipped the ball into the cage to account for the final goal.
Brown dominated the game, outshooting the Crusaders, 20-6, and earning 12 penalty corners to Holy Cross' seven. Freshman Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) earned the victory in net with three saves.
The Bears return to action on Sunday, November 2, when they travel to Philadelphia, PA to face Penn in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
