Seniors Lead Brown Past Penn, 1-0, on Senior Day
Oct. 29, 2005
PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior co-captain Kristen Vincent (Glens Falls, NY) scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal less than 10:00 into the game as the Brown field hockey team (7-8, 4-2) earned a tough 1-0 victory over Penn (8-7, 3-3) in an Ivy League contest on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Warner Roof. The game marked the final career contest at home for the five seniors; Lindsay Boris (Shavertown, PA), Libbie Fritz (Gladstone, NJ), Laura Kavazanjian (Setauket, NY), and co-captains Brooke Townsend (Stamford, CT) and Vincent. All five started the game and all five were critical in helping to lead the Bears to the victory.
Brown dominated the first half of play, outshooting Penn 6-3 during the first 35:00, including a 5-1 margin in shots on goal. The first 10:00 of play featured back-and-forth action, played primarily in the midfield, as neither team registered a shot on net during the early going.
On Brown's first shot of the game, Vincent scored the only goal of the contest on a direct hit off a Brown penalty corner. Her goal was assisted by junior leading scorer Samantha Lloyd (Shavertown, PA), and would stand up, despite a strong second half by Penn.
The Bears played solid team defense for the entire first half, not allowing a Penn penalty corner until less than four minutes remained in the half, and not allowing a Penn shot to reach the net until just 3:31 remained on the clock.
The second half, however, was a different story. Penn dominated the pace of play, outshooting Brown 6-2 during the half, including a 4-1 margin in shots on goal. In addition, the Bears didn't take a shot on goal in the second half until 5:52 remained in the game.
But Brown was able to hold on for the win, playing strong team defense until the final whistle, and getting help early in the half when a Penn shot hit the post with 26:00 left in the game.
Sophomore Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) earned her second shutout of the season with five saves, including four in the second half. The Bears, who can still finish in second place in the Ivy League, conclude the 2005 season next Saturday, November 5, when they travel to Yale for a 12:00 noon contest.
