Field Hockey Defeats Cornell, 2-1

Oct. 26, 2003

Providence, RI - Sophomore Tess Belmont (Poughkeepsie, NY) scored an unassisted goal with 1:46 remaining in regulation to lead Brown (9-5, 3-2) to a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Cornell in field hockey action on Sunday afternoon.

The Big Red took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the first half, holding onto that lead until mid-way through the second half when Brown senior Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) tied the contest at 1-1 with 14:38 remaining in the game. Senior Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX) earned an assist on the goal. Buza gathered the ball on the left side after it came off a save by Cornell's goalie, and sent it toward the cage, where Pierpont was there for the equalizer.

Brown used a breakaway with just under two minutes left to notch the game-winner, as Belmont drew the Big Red keeper out of the cage and fired a shot from just inside the left portion of the circle that found the boards for the go-ahead tally.

Junior Katie Noe (Simsbury, CT) made six saves, all in the first half, to earn the victory for Brown. The Bears continue actin on Wednesday, October 29, hosting Holy Cross at 4:00 p.m. on Warner Roof.
