Field Hockey Wins Overtime Thriller Against Providence, 3-2 in Penalty Strokes

Oct. 23, 2002

PROVIDENCE, RI - Four of five Bears converted on penalty strokes and sophomore goalie Katie Noe (Simsbury, CT) stopped two of the first four Friars' penalty stoke attempts as Brown (5-7) defeated cross-town rival Providence College (8-10), 3-2, in a non-league contest Wednesday afternoon at Warner Roof.

After nearly an entire half of scoreless action, Brown took a 1-0 lead when junior leading scorer Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) scored an unassisted goal with 6:12 left in the first half. The Bears continued their tough play, taking a 2-0 lead with less than 15 minutes left in the game as junior Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX) connected with classmate Meaghan Harwood (Hoosick Falls, NY) with 14:44 remaining.

However, Providence would not stop fighting and junior Kelly Romanowicz nearly single-handedly brought the Friars back into the game, scoring with 5:41 left to play and again with just 17 seconds left, sending the game into overtime.

After two scoreless 15-minute overtime periods, the game went into penalty strokes. The Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in penalty strokes when senior Cory Pelletier (Walpole, MA) scored. Noe saved PC's first shot and senior Ashley Wallace (Avon, CT) converted on her stroke, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead.

Providence came to within one as Kara Lukens scored on her stroke, which was followed by a failed attempt by Brown. PC knotted the count at two strokes each when Stefanie Suehnholz scored, but Brown remained one goal ahead as sophomore Julia Kelderman (Chevy Chase, MD) converted for the Bears. Noe stopped PC's next attempt, setting up Pierpont's penalty stroke, which she scored as Brown gained the penalty stroke point and the 3-2 victory.

Noe finished with a season-high 15 saves in net for the Bears, while Meaghan Moran made 10 for Providence. Brown continues action on Saturday when it hosts the Cornell in an Ivy League contest at 12:00 noon at Warner Roof.
