FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman Abigail Taft (Shaker Heights, OH), the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week, scored twice in the first 12 minutes of play to help lead the Brown field hockey team (3-7) to a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart (3-9) on Tuesday afternoon at Campus Field.
The Bears' leading scorer now with 14 points, Taft scored the first two goals of the game three minutes apart. At the 9:18 mark, she was in the middle of the circle to deflect a shot by senior Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA) past Sacred Heart keeper Kim Stow. Just after the 12-minute mark, at 12:07, she was standing at the side of the net and tipped home a pass from senior Natalie Harrington (Locust Valley, NY) to make it 2-0.
Then, just 5:22 later, at 17:29, freshman Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA) connected for her first career goal, scoring on a penalty stroke.
Sacred Heart got one back with 4:30 remaining in the first half when Carisa Eye tipped a Whitney Russo shot past sophomore Lauren Kessler (Burtonsville, MD) to bring the Pioneers to within 3-1.
Eye scored again to make it 3-2 in the 66th minute when she deflected another Russo shot past Kessler.
The Pioneers had a 25-15 shot advantage and a 19-8 lead in penalty corners, including an 11-2 margin in the second half. Kessler finished with eight saves to pick up the win, while junior Michaela Seigo (Annandale, VA) and senior Victoria Sacco (Madison, NJ) each had one defensive save to help lead the Bears' defense.
Brown returns to action on Sunday, October 12, when it travels to Vermont to face the Catamounts in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
