PROVIDENCE, RI - Seniors Stacy Gugliotta (East Falmouth, MA) and Samantha Lloyd (Shavertown, PA) each scored to lead the Brown field hockey team (6-2) to a 2-0 victory over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon at Warner Roof. With their 6-2 record, the Bears are off to their best start since the 1999 season when they posted a 7-1 mark during their first eight games en route to an Ivy Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Brown wasted little time in grabbing the 1-0 lead as Gugliotta scored her second goal in as many games just 10:00 into the contest. Junior Ani Kazarian (Providence, RI) collected the ball off a Brown free hit from the sideline and sent it into the circle, where Gugliotta one-timed the ball into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year.
Less than 10 minutes later, Lloyd fired a rocket from the top of the circle that beat Fairfield keeper Elizabeth Thomas stick side, providing some insurance for the Bears.
Brown dominated the first half, outshooting the Stags, 14-2, while forcing both of Fairfield's shots wide of the cage. The second half was more of the same, with Brown holding a 7-3 advantage in shots. However, Fairfield fired all three of its shots on net, but junior Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) was up to the task, turning aside all three to pick up her third shutout of the season.
Brown returns to Ivy action this Saturday at 12:00 noon when it welcomes the Columbia Lions to Warner Roof. Last year, Brown picked up a 2-1 victory over Columbia on the strength of two second-half goals from senior Tracy Dungo (North Caldwell, NJ) and sophomore Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA).
