Field Hockey Wins Third Straight With 2-1 Victory Over Rutgers

Sept. 30, 2001

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Sophomore Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX) scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in the game to lead Brown (3-3) to a 2-1 victory over Rutgers (2-7) on Sunday, September 30.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early lead when senior Andschana Mendes scored during a penalty corner just 2:29 into the game, as senior Heidi Harvey inserted the ball and Rebecca Lippincott made the stop.

The Rutgers defense kept Brown out of the circle, allowing them to make only two shots and sophomore Stacey Gaenzle made her only save of the day on Brown's first shot, late into the first half. Rutgers maintained the 1-0 lead through the half and into the late part of the second.

Not to be outdone, Brown rallied late in final stanza with a goal from sophomore Nora Pickens (Wyndmoor, PA), the first goal of her career. On a corner, she received a pass from junior Cory Pelletier (Walpole, MA) and fired the ball into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1 with 4:32 remaining.

The Bears scored the final goal of the afternoon less then two minutes later when Buza slipped a shot past Gaenzle earning junior tri-captain Ashley Wallace (Avon, CT) the assist and giving Brown the 2-1 win, their third straight.

Freshman Kathryn Noe (Simsbury, CT) made three saves in the game for her third career win, while Gaenzle tallied one save for the Scarlet Knights.

Brown will be back in action this Wednesday, October 3, when it travels to play Northeastern. The game, which will be played at Wentworth Institute, begins at 5:00 p.m.
