PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team (0-8) tied the score at 1-1 12 minutes into the second half, but UMass (5-5) broke the tie just 10 minutes before the end of regulation to earn a 2-1 win over the Bears on Wednesday night at Garber Field. Junior Victoria Sacco (Madison, NJ) scored her second goal of the season, while freshman Lauren Kessler (Burtonsville, MD) made five saves in her first collegiate start.
Brown outshot UMass, 4-3, and held a 1-0 advantage in penalty corners during the first 35 minutes, but it was Massachusetts that would score the first goal of the game when Erin Parker scored off an assist from Katie Kelly at 20:57.
Despite UMass holding a 6-1 advantage in both shots and corners during the second half, the Bears tied the game at 1-1 at 47:08 when Sacco scored on a direct shot from the top of the circle on Brown's only corner of the half. Sophomore Jackie Connard (Pipersville, PA) and junior Sara Eaton (Arlington, VA) both earned assists on the goal. Sacco's goal came just five minutes after Kessler made three stops in a row on consecutive shots by Cher King and two by Mary Shea in the 43rd minute to keep Brown in the game.
However, that was the Bears' only shot of the half and the Minutewomen were able to net the go-ahead goal on a penalty corner of their own at 60:38.
The Bears continue non-league action this weekend when they travel to New Jersey to face Rutgers at 12:00 noon on Sunday, September 30th.
