PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team (0-6) drew even with URI (6-2) just four minutes after the Rams had taken a 1-0 lead, but Rhody would add three more goals over the next 57 minutes to earn a 4-1 victory over the Bears on Wednesday afternoon at Warner Roof.
The Rams got on the board early when Jill Powers, who finished with a hat-trick, found the back of the net at 8:20. Annie Kane took a shot from the top of the circle that senior Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) saved, but the rebound popped out to Powers, who knocked it into the near corner for the 1-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, at 12:07, the Bears earned back-to-back penalty corners, their only two of the game. Brown failed to score on the first attempt, but drew another corner. On the second corner, sophomore Whitney Knowlton's (Columbus, OH) shot was saved. The ball came out to junior Victoria Sacco (Madison, NJ) on the right side and she slipped it past M.J. Britt to even the score at 1-1.
The Rams would get one back before the end of the half, at 25:16, when Jeannie Records knocked another rebound past Hodavance.
The Bears outshot URI, 7-5, in the second half, but the Rams converted two of their shots for goals to earn the 4-1 victory. Powers added her second of the game at 47:27, tipping in a shot from Records and at 67:17, she completed the hat-trick when she got the ball in front and slipped it between Hodavance's legs.
For the game, Hodavance recorded eight saves, including five in the first half. Junior Ann LeClerc (Acton, MA) also earned a defensive save to help lead the Bears' defense. After four straight non-league games, Brown resumes Ivy action this weekend when it travels up I-95 to Cambridge, MA to face Harvard at 12:00 noon.
