PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team (0-5) dominated Georgetown (2-6) for the majority of the game, but came up short in a 1-0 loss to the Hoyas on Sunday afternoon at Warner Roof. Senior Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) stopped 11 shots in the Brown net, while classmate Sandhya Dhir (Agoura Hills, CA) led the Bears at the other end of the field with six shots.
The Bears came out strong, firing four shots in the first 5:25 of the game, but Georgetown's Deirdre Crovo stopped two, one went wide and one was blocked as Brown was kept off the board.
On the Hoyas' first shot of the game, at 10:50, Lindsay Moramarco was alone on the left wing and found the far right corner off a feed from Alice Murnen for a 1-0 lead.
After the goal, Georgetown gained some momentum and was in control of the game for the middle part of the first half, firing off four shots on goal, all of which Hodavance saved. The Bears picked things up towards the end of the first half and then gained more momentum 10 minutes into the second half, earning five penalty corners and taking three shots during the next 10-minute span.
At one point, Brown earned three penalty corners in a row and appeared to have scored on the second one, as sophomore Jackie Connard (Pipersville, PA) redirected a lose ball, but a foul had been called just prior to the ball finding the back of the net.
For the game, Brown held the advantage in every statistical category except the final score, taking 16 shots to Georgetown's 14 and earning nine penalty corners to Georgetown's eight. The difference proved to be in shots-on-goal, as 12 of the Hoyas' 14 found the net, while just seven of Brown's 16 were on the cage. The Bears wrap up their five-game homestand this Wednesday, September 19, when they host in-state rival URI at 4:00 p.m. The game video will be streamed live on the internet.
