PROVIDENCE, RI - Maine (2-4) scored twice in the opening 15 minutes of play and held on for a 2-0 win over the Brown field hockey team (0-4) on a cold and rainy afternoon at Warner Roof. Junior Victoria Sacco (Madison, NJ) had three shots, while freshman Katie Hyland (Riegelsville, PA) tallied two to lead Brown's attack.
The Bears came out fast and dominated possession during the opening portion of the game, but it was Maine that would score the opening goal. On their first offensive possession, the Black Bears worked the ball down the field to Kim MacDonald on the right wing. MacDonald sent a long shot across the circle and the ball found its way into the net at the far corner just 6:44 into the game.
Less than eight minutes later, at 14:21, Maine added another goal when Erin Reusch knocked a lose ball past senior Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) after the ball was deflected off a Brown stick.
The Bears dominated the second half, outshooting Maine 9-3, but it wasn't until the 62:57 mark that a Brown shot was on net. Senior Sandhya Dhir (Agoura Hills, CA) fired a long shot from the left side that Rebecca Giroux was able to save. With 2:04 left in the game, Giroux saved a Sacco shot from the top of the circle on one of Brown's six second-half penalty corners.
For the game, Brown outshot Maine, 11-8 and posted a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners. Hodavance and Giroux both finished the game with two saves. Brown will look to get in the win column tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Georgetown on Sunday at noon. Game video will be streamed live on the internet.
