Field Hockey Opens Season with Commanding 7-0 Win over Albany
Sept. 4, 2004
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team (1-0) defeated Albany (0-4) in commanding fashion on Saturday afternoon at Warner Roof. Sophomore Samantha Lloyd's (Shavertown, PA) first career goal with 17:27 remaining in the first half would be all the Bears would need in taking the 7-0 win.
After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless action, Lloyd broke the 0-0 tie when she knocked in the rebound of her own shot. Less than 10 minutes later, junior Tess Belmont (Poughkeepsie, NY) sped up field on a breakaway, setting up junior Brooke Townsend's (Houston, TX) first goal of the game. After Belmont's initial shot was saved, Albany's Barbara Czaplinski left the ball out in front for Townsend to knock it into the wide open net. Brown would take a 3-0 lead with 7:24 remaining in the half when Belmont notched an unassisted goal.
The Bears dominated the majority of the second half, scoring less than five minutes into the frame to take a 4-0 lead. After a scramble in front of the net, junior Lindsay Boris (Shavertown, PA) chipped the ball over an outstretched Jessica Montmarquet for the 4-0 lead. Nearly five minutes later, Brown had three penalty corners in a row. After failing to convert on the first two, Townsend notched her second goal of the game on assists from Belmont and senior Julia Kelderman (Chevy Chase, MD), giving Brown a 5-0 lead with 25:20 remaining in the game.
Junior Libby Fritz (Gladstone, NJ) connected with sophomore Stacy Gugliotta (East Falmouth, MA) with 18:42 left to play for a 6-0 Brown lead, and sophomore Tracy Dungo (North Caldwell, NJ) added an unassisted tally with 11:50 remaining for the final 7-0.
In net for the Bears, senior Katie Noe (Simsbury, CT) notched two saves to earn the shutout, while sophomore Katie Lee (Chevy Chase, MD) recorded two defensive saves and junior Laura Kavazanjian (Setauket, NY) added one defensive save. Brown continues action on Wednesday, September 8, when it faces Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Yale.
