Dhir Scores Twice to Lead Brown past Vermont, 5-2, in Season Opener
Sept. 3, 2006
PROVIDENCE, RI - Junior Sandhya Dhir (Agoura Hills, CA) scored two goals and assisted on the game-winner to help lead Brown (1-0) to a 5-2 win over Vermont (1-3) in the Bears' 2006 season opener. Brown's other three goals all came off the stick of three different players, including senior Samantha Lloyd (Shavertown, PA), who notched the game-winner.
The two teams battled back-and-forth for the first seven minutes of play, as neither team could get inside the circle and get a shot off. However, Dhir gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at 7:29, scoring on the first shot of the game.
Less than three minutes later, Vermont threatened, when Danielle Collins fired a shot on net, but junior Kristen Hodavance (Emmaus, PA) made an aerial save on the attempt to keep the Catamounts off the board.
Brown controlled the remainder of the half, as Vermont didn't take another shot for the remaining 24:45. The Bears were able to increase their lead to 3-0 before the end of the first period behind goals from junior Andrea Posa (Weston, MA) at 14:22, and Lloyd's game-winner at 28:27, which was assisted by Dhir.
Vermont came out gunning in the second half, holding the ball in its offensive end for nearly 15:00, while earning seven penalty corners during the first 20:00 of the half. Finally the persistence paid off during the seventh corner, when Maegan Luce tipped in a shot from Kim Striegler at 56:08 to bring the Catamounts to within 3-1.
However, a yellow card to a Vermont player with 8:19 remaining in the game gave the Bears a 10-9 player advantage for five minutes. Brown capitalized with two goals in a span of 1:31 during this time to put the game out of reach. Dhir added her second of the game off a pass from senior Stacy Gugliotta (East Falmouth, MA) at 62:15 and junior Ani Kazarian (Providence, RI) scored her first of the year at 63:46.
Vermont added its final goal at 66:51 when Striegler converted on a penalty stroke after Kelly McClintock was fouled during a one-on-one situation.
Hodavance recorded the victory with six saves, including five in the second half. Erin Hickey recorded 10 saves in net for the Catamounts. The Bears continue action on Saturday, September 9, when they travel to Hanover, NH to face Dartmouth at 12:00 noon in their 2006 Ivy League Opener.
