ITHACA, N.Y. – Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) scored in the final minute of play, but Brown's rally fell short in a 2-1 loss to Cornell at Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday. Brown drops to 6-8 (1-4 Ivy) while the Big Red improves to 9-5 (3-2 Ivy) on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) allowed one goal while turning aside six shots in 64:28 of action as she fell to 6-8 this season. The Bears played the final 5:32 with the extra attacker as the teams tallied all three goals in a frantic final 10 minutes.
The teams battled through an even first half with the shots and penalty corners even at four and one respectively through 35 minutes of play.
The Big Red offense started to show life in the second half as they landed seven of eight attempted shots on goal. With just under seven minutes to play, Elly Plappert broke the deadlock as her drive from the top of the circle beat McSweeney to put Cornell up 1-0.
McSweeney was pulled for an extra attacker with just over five minutes to play, however, it was Cornell that was able to deposit the next goal, a tally by Marisa Siergiej off a penalty corner at 66:56.
O'Donnell got the Bears on the board with 58 seconds to play as she put home a rebound for her team-leading 11th goal of the season. Carolyn Horner (three saves) shut the door in goal for the Big Red as the Bears were unable to net the equalizer with a flurry in the final moments.
Brown will return to action on Nov. 2 for Senior Day against Penn at Goldberger Family Field (12 PM).
