Field Hockey Outlasts Holy Cross, 3-1
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) scored twice and Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, B.C.) added a tally en route to a 3-1 victory for the Brown field hockey team over Holy Cross (4-11) on Wednesday at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears extended their winning streak to six games versus Holy Cross dating back to 2008.
Junior goalkeeper Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) turned aside all seven shots in goal in 64:18 to improve to 6-7 this season. Sophomore Cally Moran (Windsor, Conn.) made her collegiate debut, surrendering one goal in 5:42 of action. Kat Matchett stopped four of seven shots on goal for the visiting Crusaders to drop to 3-8 this season.
After a defensive struggle in the early going, the Bears broke the ice first on Miller's fifth tally of the year as her shot deflected off a Holy Cross defender past Matchett at the 12:55 mark.
Just under eight minutes later, Angus took a feed from Charlotte Small (Summit, N.J.) and whistled a high shot into the upper left corner to extend the Brown cushion to 2-0. The goal was Angus' third of the season and second in the last three games.
The Bears started the second half strong as Miller struck again, her sixth marker of the season, off a corner that extended the lead to 3-0 at the 37:27 mark. Alvarez recorded her first assist of the season on Miller's goal, while Avery Burns (Millersville, Md.) notched her team-leading seventh assist.
The Crusaders spoiled the shutout bid with just under five minutes to play as Gabriella Smith re-directed a pass from Katy Cronin into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1.
With the victory, the Bears improve to 6-7 on the season as they travel to Cornell on Saturday for an Ivy League matchup against the Big Red.
