Field Hockey Upends Vermont, 3-1, on First Day of Catamount Classic

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) notched a goal and an assist to lift the Brown field hockey team over the University of Vermont, 3-1, in day one action of the Catamount Classic at Moulton Winder Field on Saturday. Consecutive wins bump the Bears to 2-1 overall while the Catamounts sink to 0-5 on the season.

"We played really well against a Vermont team that was quick and aggressive," said Head Coach Jill Reeve. "I thought our team played with a lot of poise under that pressure."

Junior Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, N.J.) beat UVM goalie Stephanie Zygmunt to the back of the cage off a feed from sophomore Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) for the lone goal of the first half. Brown doubled its advantage just 39 seconds into the second period after Masini pounced on a loose ball in front of the goal and flushed it to make it a 2-0 game.

Junior Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) maintained her grip on the team scoring lead when she beat the keeper to the low corner off Masini's rebound, effectively putting the Bears in the driver's seat with a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute.

The Catamounts spoiled the shutout with 6:26 to play on an Ashley McDonald goal from just inside the circle, but UVM would not manage another attempt on the goal in the final minutes as Brown secured its second straight win.

Brown junior goalie Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, Mass.) turned away four of the five shots on goal she faced, while Zygmunt made 13 saves against a persistent Bears offense that outshot the opposition 16-5.

The Bears conclude their Vermont tenure tomorrow against Maine at 2:30 p.m.
