WORCESTER, MA – Sophomore Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) recorded six saves en route to her first career shutout, while sophomore Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) posted four points to help lead the Brown field hockey team (6-9) to a 4-0 win over Holy Cross (2-13) on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Bears stretched their winning streak to three games, heading into the final two contests of the 2012 season.
Brown scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of action to take a quick 2-0 lead. Sophomore leading scorer Meghan O'Donnell (Winchester, MA) netted her ninth-goal of the season at the 6:07 mark. Christus took a shot on a penalty corner that O'Donnell tipped into the back of the cage for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
Just under two minutes later, sophomore Haley Alvarez (Martinsville, NJ) ripped a shot from the top of the circle past Holy Cross goalie Kat Matchett for her third goal of the year. Junior Avery Burns (Millersville, MD) earned an assist on the goal for her first point of the season.
Brown added a third goal with 3:47 remaining in the half to take a 3-0 lead into the break. Freshman Alexis Miller (Caldwell, NJ) timed a perfect pass from Christus right on her stick to record her fourth of the year.
Christus added the final goal of the afternoon just 53 seconds into the second half when she dribbled across the crease and shot the ball into the back of the cage for her fourth of the year.
The Bears finished the game with a 15-12 advantage in shots, while the Crusaders led in penalty corners, 7-6. Matchett recorded five saves for Holy Cross, while Lindsay MacPhail had a defensive save.
Brown returns to action on Sunday, October 28th, when it travels to Philadelphia to face Penn in a 12:00 noon Ivy Contest.
