HAMDEN, CT – Sophomore Clayton Christus (Bernardsville, NJ) and freshman Alexis Miller (Caldwell, NJ) both had a goal and an assist to lead the Brown field hockey team (2-5), but the Bears' come-back-attempt came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Quinnipiac (6-4) on Wednesday afternoon.
After falling behind just 6:26 into the game, Christus tied the game at 12:03 when she deflected a pass by Miller into the net on a Brown corner.
However, Quinnipiac would regain the lead before the break when Haley Swartz took a pass from Jennalise Taylor and fired the ball past sophomore Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) at 26:50.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 3-1 at the 53:38 mark, converting one of their 12 corners. However, Miller and Christus combined just three minutes later on a Brown corner to bring the Bears to within a goal with 13:30 remaining.
That was as close as Brown could get, however, as Quinnipiac limited the Bears to just one corner and one shot the rest of the way to hold on for the win.
For the game, Quinnipiac held a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 12-7 lead in penalty corners. McSweeney finished with three saves, while Nicole Lewis (3) and Megan Conaboy (1) combined for four saves in the Bobcats' cage.
Brown returns home this weekend for a Saturday-Sunday double-header. The Bears host Harvard on Saturday and Fairfield on Sunday. Both games begin at noon.
