Bears Fall to Columbia, 3-1, in Ivy Opener

NEW YORK, NY – Senior Bridget McNamara's (Bethesda, MD) first goal of the season gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, but Columbia (2-3, 1-0) would scored three times in the game's final minutes to earn a 3-1 win over the Brown field hockey team (1-4, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue.

The Bears were outshot, 16-6, during the opening half, but converted on one of their four first-half penalty corners to take a 1-0 lead at the break. With just 37 seconds left in the first half, senior Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA) sent the ball to McNamara at the top left of the circle and McNamara beat Columbia's Christie O'Hara for the 1-0 lead.

However, the Lions fought to get back into the game during the final 35 minutes, outshooting Brown, 13-2, and earning eight penalty corners to Brown's four. Columbia finally broke through for the tying score in the 53rd minute, when Gabby Kozlowski beat freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA).

The score remained tied at 1-1 for nearly 10 minutes, but the Lions converted a penalty corner at 61:40 for the game-winner and then went ahead, 3-1, just four minutes later, which is how the score would remain through the final whistle.

The game was highly contested throughout with four total cards issued, two green and two yellow. McSweeney finished the day with 14 saves, including eight in the first half, while O'Hara made six saves for Columbia, as Brown was outshot for the game, 29-8.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, September 20, when they host Bryant in a 4:00 p.m. contest. It is the first of three straight games at home, as the Bears welcome Dartmouth and Colgate to Warner Roof this weekend.
