Hyland Receives John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Award
Former field hockey standout Katie Hyland ’11 (Riegelsville, PA) has been named one of five winners for the 12th annual John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Award, announced Thursday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation.

Iacovetti, McNamara and Springmeyer Named 2011 Field Hockey Captains
Brown field hockey head coach Jill Reeve has announced that seniors Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA), Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD), and Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) have been named captains for the 2011 season. All three have been valuable contributors since their arrival at Brown in the fall of 2008, and will look to lead the Bears both on and off the field.

Bears Fall to Unbeaten New Hampshire, 5-0, in Season Opener
The Brown field hockey team (0-1) faced a tough University of New Hampshire squad on Friday afternoon in its season opener, falling to the Wildcats, 5-0. Freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) recorded 11 saves in her collegiate debut.

Bears Set to Open 2011 Season at New Hampshire
Under the direction of new head coach Jill Reeve, the Brown field hockey team will look towards continued improvement over the 2010 season, during which the Bears were 6-11 overall and 3-4 in the Ivy League, good for fourth place. Reeve, who came to Brown after rebuilding the Miami Ohio field hockey program during her seven-year tenure, will rely on the leadership of a strong senior class, especially tri-captains Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA), Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD), and Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ), to help guide the Bears both on and off the field.

Harrison Lifts Bears to 3-2 Come from Behind Win over UC Davis
Junior Kelley Harrison (Houston, TX) broke a 2-2 tie with her first goal of the season at the 64:11 mark to lift the Brown field hockey team (1-1) to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over visiting UC Davis Sunday afternoon at Warner Roof. The two teams traded goals throughout and Brown fought back from a pair of first-half one-goal deficits before Harrison’s game-winner with 5:49 left to play.

Bears' Comeback Spoiled by Late Pacific Goal
Trailing, 3-2, for the majority of the second half, senior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) tipped a shot from classmate Bridget McNamara (Bethesda, MD) on a Bears’ corner to tie the score at 3-3 with 4:29 remaining in the game. However, the Tigers would answer on a corner of their own just 2:48 later to take a 4-3 lead and Brown couldn’t find the equalizer, despite earning a corner in the waning seconds.

#15 Iowa Hands Bears 7-0 Defeat
Iowa’s Kim Scraper, who entered the game with eight goals on the season through five contests, scored her first of four goals just 9:05 in and the 15th-ranked Hawkeyes (5-1) never looked back en route to a 7-0 victory over the Brown field hockey team (1-3), Saturday afternoon at Providence College’s Lennon Field. Brown freshman goalie Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) posted a new career-high 18 saves on the afternoon, passing her previous high of 11 by seven.

Bears Fall to Columbia, 3-1, in Ivy Opener
Senior Bridget McNamara’s (Bethesda, MD) first goal of the season gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, but Columbia (2-3, 1-0) would scored three times in the game’s final minutes to earn a 3-1 win over the Brown field hockey team (1-4, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue.

Bryant Spoils Bears Comeback with Winning Tally in 56th minute
Bryant’s Kayleigh Ballantyne scored on a breakaway at 55:30 to lift the Bulldogs (3-4) to a 3-2 victory over the Brown field hockey team (1-5) on Tuesday afternoon at Warner Roof. Ballantyne’s goal came just 20 minutes after the Bears had tied the game on the first goal of the season by senior Abigail Taft (Shaker Heights, OH).

Bears Drop 4-3 Heartbreaker to Dartmouth in Overtime
Dartmouth’s Ali Savage, the current Ivy League Rookie of the Week, scored the game-winning goal exactly eight minutes into overtime to lift the visiting Big Green (5-2, 2-0) to a 4-3 overtime win over the Brown field hockey team (1-6, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon at Warner Roof.

Colgate Hands Bears 3-2 Loss
Senior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) scored her fourth goal of the year with 3:23 left to play to bring Brown (1-7) to within 3-2, but the Bears’ comeback fell just short as Colgate (4-6) would hold on for the one-goal decision on Sunday afternoon at Warner Roof. For the Bears, it marks their fifth one-goal loss of the season.

Springmeyer Ties Brown’s All-Time Career Points Record and Stearns Scores Twice in 3-1 Win over Fairfield
Sophomore Torie Stearns (Rye, NY) scored two goals, her second one coming just 36 seconds after Fairfield had come to within 2-1, to help lead the Brown field hockey team (3-8) to a 3-1 win over the Stags (8-5) on Sunday afternoon. Both of Stearns’ goals were scored in the game’s final six minutes, while senior Abigail Taft (Shaker Heights, OH) gave Brown an early lead with her second of the year to help lead the Bears’ to their second straight win.

McSweeney Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week
Brown field hockey freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 9th. McSweeney was instrumental in helping to lead the Bears to a pair of non-league wins, as Brown was 2-0 for the week. For the week, McSweeney posted 13 saves, a 1.50 GAA and a .813 save percentage.

The Princeton Field Hockey team (6-6, 3-1) scored three goals in each half en route to a 6-0 win over the Bears (3-9, 0-4) on Saturday afternoon at Warner Roof. Princeton’s Allison Evans scored a pair of goals and added an assist, while Rachel Neufeld also had two goals.

Seniors Kit Masini (Ann Arbor, MI) and Abigail Taft (Shaker Heights, OH) both scored for Brown, but it wasn’t enough as Cornell (7-7, 1-4) claimed a 4-2 win over the Bears (3-11, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon in Ithaca.

The Brown field hockey team (4-12, 0-6) fought back from an early, 1-0, deficit and then went ahead, 2-1, but Penn (4-12, 2-4) would score back-to-back goals to earn a 3-2 victory over the Bears on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Warner Roof.

O'Donnell Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week
Brown field hockey freshman Meghan O’Donnell (Winchester, MA) has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 30th. The Bears’ leading scorer with 17 points, O’Donnell helped to lead Brown to a 1-1 week, scoring three goals and assisting a fourth.

Brown University Associate Athletic Director and former head field hockey coach Carolan Norris has been named to the New Agenda: Northeast Women's Hall of Fame. The 2011 New Agenda: Northeast Women's Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at the Woodland Golf Club in Newton, MA on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 12:30 p.m.

Yale Overpowers Bears, 7-0, in Season Finale
The Brown field hockey team (4-13, 0-7) dropped a 7-0 decision to Yale (11-6, 6-1) on Saturday afternoon in New Haven. The Bear were outshot, 51-6, for the game, including a 27-3 margin in shots on goal. Freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA) was spectacular in net, stopping a career-high 20 shots, five saves shy of Brown’s record for saves in a game.

Three Bears Earn All-Ivy Honors
Senior Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA) was named Second Team All-Ivy to lead three Brown players in earning 2011 All-Ivy honors in a vote by the League’s eight head coaches. Joining Iacovetti in this year’s All-Ivy selections senior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) and freshman Shannon McSweeney (Boxborough, MA), who both earned Honorable Mention honors.

2011 Fall Academic All-Ivy Announced
The Ivy League released its fall list of Academic All-ivy honorees, with 10 Brown student-athletes being recognized. The five males and five females were starters or key reserves on their respective varsity teams and carry a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average.

Reeve to Coach at U17 National Squad Camp
Brown head field hockey coach Jill Reeve will be joining the coaching staff for the United States U17 National Squad Camp to be held in Chula Vista, CA from January 26-29. Boston College head coach Ainslee Lamb will serve as head coach of the group and will be assisted by Reeve and Jarred Martin, an assistant coach at Duke. The trio will run several days of practice leading up to a final day of scrimmaging at the Olympic Training Center.

15 Bears Named to 2011 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad; Bears Finish 5th Nationally for Team GPA
Fifteen members of the field hockey team were named to the 2011 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year. In addition, Brown’s team GAP of 3.46 during the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year ranked fifth nationally. American led the way with a 3.55, while St. Francis had a 3.53. Monmouth (3.48), Central Michigan (3.47), and Brown (3.46) rounded out the top five. Overall, Brown was one of 65 Division I teams to earn the 2011 NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. This award recognizes those institutions that achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.
