PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown field hockey team (1-6) dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting Fairfield (6-4) on Tuesday afternoon at Warner Roof. The Bears scored a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game, sandwiched around a single goal for the Stags, but Fairfield would go on to score four straight goals to claim a 5-2 victory in a game played in a steady rain.
The Bears got on the board just 2:36 in when sophomore Elara Mosquera (North Hampton, NH) struck for her first goal of the year on a Brown corner, the first corner of the game for either team. Junior Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) inserted the ball up to junior Laura Iacovetti (Blue Bell, PA), who slid it over to Mosquera on her left. Mosquera fired a shot through traffic that beat the Fairfield goalie to the right for the 1-0 lead.
However, the Stags would answer just 5:11 later when Anne Nieuwenhuis scored on a direct shot on Fairfield's first corner of the afternoon.
Junior Abigail Taft (Shaker Heights, OH) wasted little time in giving Brown a 2-1 lead, responding just 1:17 later when she picked up a lose ball directly in front of the net and shot to the left side for her fourth goal of the year.
Things quieted down after Taft's goal, but after a dangerous series of shots by the Bears in the 20th minute, Fairfield tied the game at 2-2 when Molly Caffrey redirected an Amanda Keller cross with 11:05 left in the first half.
The Stags put the game away with three goals in the second half, the first two of which were scored on direct shots by Marit Westenberg on Fairfield corners just nine minutes apart. Amanda Sullivan tallied on another redirect with 4:09 left to account for the 5-2 final.
For the game, Fairfield outshot Brown, 17-12, including a 12-6
margin in the second half, while Brown had nine penalty corners to
Fairfield's eight. Junior Lauren Kessler (Burtonsville, MD)
made seven saves, including six in the second half, while
Fairfield's Caitlin O'Donnell and Maddy Sposito
combined for five saves.
Brown will look to rebound this Saturday when it hosts Harvard in a 12:00 noon Ivy League contest.
