IOWA CITY, IA – The Brown field hockey team (0-1) faced a tough Miami (Ohio) squad on Saturday afternoon in its season opener, falling to the Hawks, 1-0, in a neutral site game played at the University of Iowa.
Through four games for Miami, Brown became the first team to limit the Hawks to less than four goals, as they have outscored their opposition, 17-5. In addition, Miami has scored early in each of its three games prior to today, grabbing a 1-0 lead during the opening six minutes of play. Today, however, Brown limited Miami to just three first-half shots and kept the Hawks at bay until the 37th minute of play.
The Bears played strong team defense in limiting the Hawks to just the single goal, despite getting outshot, 16-0, including an 8-0 margin in shots on goal. Miami also held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners, including a 5-0 margin during the final 35 mintues.
Junior Lauren Kessler (Burtonsville, MD) was solid in net, stopping seven shots, including six in the second half.
Brown returns to action on Monday afternoon when it faces #19 Iowa in a 12:00 noon (CST) contest.
