ITHACA, NY - Cornell utilized a 5-2 second half, as the Big Red (9-3, 3-2) earned a 7-3 victory over the Brown field hockey team (4-10, 0-5) on Saturday afternoon in Ithaca. Sophomore Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) led the Bears with two goals and an assist, while sophomore Caroline Washburn (Pittsburgh, PA) made 12 saves in net. With her five-point game, Springmeyer has moved into 10th all-time at Brown in both career goals with 16 and career points with 44.
Cornell grabbed a 1-0 lead at 14:26 when Kate De Stio scored on a direct shot off a Big Red penalty corner. However, Springmeyer responded for Brown just 3:26 later when she collected a pass from junior Tacy Zysk (Walpole, MA) and beat Cornell goalie Alex Botte one-on-one to tie the game at 1-1.
The Big Red would regain a one-goal lead prior to halftime when Kelley Kantarian's shot deflected past Washburn off a Brown defender at 29:03. Cornell opened the second half with three goals in the first 10:20 to push its lead to 5-1 at the 45:20 mark.
Brown got one back 1:27 later when junior Katie Hyland (Riegelsville, PA) struck on a Brown corner off assists from Springmeyer and senior Michaela Seigo (Annandale, VA).
The two teams traded goals in the final 12 minutes of play with Springmeyer's second goal at 63:23 sandwiched between Cornell goals at 58:39 and 68:04.
For the game, Cornell outshot the Bears, 29-13, and held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corners. Brown continues action on Tuesday, October, 27th when it hosts Holy Cross in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
