ORONO, ME - The Brown field hockey team (4-7) dropped an 8-2 decision to the University of Maine (10-4) in a non-league match on Sunday afternoon in Orono. Sophomors Kit Masini (Ann Arbor, MI) and Leslie Springmeyer (New Vernon, NJ) each scored to lead the Bears.
The Black Bears started off the scoring at 9:02 into the first half when Kelly Newton received a pass right in front of the cage from Maire Dineen and finished by scoring to the left post. Maine would go up by two goals when Brittney Cummings converted a pass from Mallory Anderson just 1:32 later. Maine increased its lead to 3-0 at 12:26 when Courtney Ceinotte scored off a pass from Newton.
The Bears responded 1:11 later when Masini broke in alone and beat Maine keeper Brittany Fleck for an unassisted goal to get Brown on the board. However, the Black Bears would answer five minutes before the half when Newton scored her second of the day to give the home team a 4-1 lead at the break.
Maine opened the scoring in the second half at 43:25 when Jocelyn Mitchell tipped in a pass from Newton. Veinotte then scored her second of the day on a penalty stroke 3:35 later and Anderson connected for a goal 48 seconds after that to give Maine a commanding, 7-1, lead with 22:12 remaining in the game.
Springmeyer scored off a penalty corner when she put home a rebound from a shot that was batted down by Maine goalkeeper Courtney Gingrich at 64:06 and Michelle Niedziejko closed the scoring with Maine's eighth of the day at 65:52 for the 8-2 final.
Sophomore Caroline Wasburn (Pittsburgh, PA) made 14 saves for Brown, while Gingrich stopped one shot for Maine, as the Black Bears outshot the Bears, 24-3.
Brown returns to action next Saturday, October 17, when the Bears host Princeton in a 12:00 noon Ivy contest.
