Phoebe Murphy Named New England Assistant Coach of the Year

The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its 2005 Regional Assistant Coaches of the Year on Tuesday and Brown women's crew assistant Phoebe Murphy was the recipient for the New England Region. Murphy helped guide the Bears to a third place finish at this year's NCAA Championships and their second straight EAWRC team title where they took gold medals in every novice event.
Murphy first came to Brown in 1987 and since that time has helped lead the Brown program to unprecedented success. Under her and head coach John Murphy's leadership, the duo has developed Brown into the winningest program in NCAA Championship history, capturing a total of four national titles in the nine year history of the event.
This past season, Brown's second varsity eight and two novice eight crews ranked number one in the region throughout the season. The second varsity eight boat rowed its way to a third place finish at NCAA's this past weekend while the varsity four came through with a second overall finish.
The coaches selected were required to meet one or more of the following criteria: 1) has demonstrated outstanding commitment to his/her program, 2) has made a significant impact on the success of his/her program, and 3) has demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
