Providence, RI - The Brown women's crew team earned its second straight sweep as it dominated UMASS and Rutgers in five races on the Seekonk River on Saturday. The varsity eight won by nearly five seconds, timing in at 6:30.84. UMass placed second, finishing in 6:35.34. Rutgers finished third with a time of 6:47.56.
UMass took the lead in the first 300 meters but the Brown women were rowing at a very high rate and were determined to make up the difference in the final 500 meters.
Head Coach John Murphy switched his lineups several times during the week as his second varsity lineup beat the varsity one day in practice. Senior Peggy McKendry earned the number two spot in the varsity boat this week, moving up from the second varsity. Sophomore Maggie Cheney moved up as well.
The second varsity eight cruised to a 28.56 second victory, timing in at 6:55.12. Rutgers placed second with a time of 7:23.68 while UMASS finished in 7:29.99. The varsity four won by an even larger margin of nearly 36 seconds. The Bears rowed the course in 7:55.5, compared to Rutgers 8:31.44 and UMASS' 9:07.58 showing.
The two novice races were no different as the first team won by nearly 23 seconds and the second by over 41 seconds. In fact, Brown's second novice eight rowed the course faster than both UMASS and Rutgers first novice eights.
Brown, currently fourth in this week's national rankings, will continue action at home on the Seekonk River next Saturday against Boston University and Texas.
