Princeton, NJ - The Brown women's crew team, ranked #1 in Collegiate Rowing's Preseason Poll, opened up the season against Princeton and Ohio State on Carniege River in Princeton, NJ on Saturday morning. Despite placing third in the Varsity 8 race, the Bears won three other races on the day.
Brown Head Coach John Murphy predicted that the Ohio State crew would be a very strong opening day opponent for the Bears. The ninth ranked Buckeyes were all that and more as they turned back Princeton and Brown.
Ohio State timed in at 6:26.2 while Princeton, ranked third in the preseason poll, placed second with a time of 6:30.83. The Bears followed in third, finishing in 6:32.80.
The Buckeyes led the entire way, beating Princeton by a full length and Brown by one and a half lengths.
"We made a rally in the third 500 and came within two seats of Princeton, but they pulled out on us in the last 30 strokes," said Murphy.
Brown captured victories in the Varsity 4, the 2nd Varsity 8 and the 2nd Novice 8. In the Novice 8, Princeton overtook Brown, which held a good lead for most of the race.
The Bears second varsity turned its race into a rout and Murphy commented: "I think some of the people who made second varsity go so fast may move up."
The Bears will continue action next Saturday when they host defending National Champion Radcliffe on the Seekonk River. Brown was the runner-up at the 2003 NCAA Championship, setting up a dual of the top two teams in the country.
