Now in her fifth season as an assistant coach in 2014-15, former Brown national champion rower Catherine Starr '05 returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach for the Brown Women's Crew in the fall of 2010.

During her time with the Bears' Starr has become an integral part of the staff, helping with the 2011 NCAA team that won the National Championship. She aided the Bears in finishing third at the 2014 NCAA Championships and first at the 2014 Ivy Championship.

Brown's team captain as a senior, Starr competed for the Brown crew from 2002-2005, rowing in the varsity boat that won the gold medal in the 2004 NCAA Varsity Eight competition and captured the NCAA Division I National Team Championship.  She also helped the Bears to a second place finish at the 2003 NCAA Championship and a third place finish in 2005.

Along the way, Starr was named a second team All-American in 2004 and a CRCA Scholar-Athlete in 2005.

A national caliber rower, Starr's career didn't end after she graduated from Brown in 2005 with a B.A. in the History of Art.  She rowed for the United States at the 2005 World U-23 Championship, winning a title in the women's four in Amsterdam.  She also participated in National Team Selection Camps in 2006 and 2008, and trained in residence with the National Team in Princeton for the 2008-2009 season.

Starr has also worked as the junior women's coach at the Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, Connecticut, coaching 30 high school rowers daily from 2005 to 2008.  Her youth club athletes experienced considerable success, placing at the Head of the Charles and at Nationals during her tenure.
