Women’s Crew Wins Club Eight at Head of Charles for Third Straight Year

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's crew won the women's club eight event for the third consecutive year to open its racing at The 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday afternoon on the Charles River.

The Bears' club eight took first place out of a field of 39 entries with a time of 16:50.417, starting out of bow position No. 1 in event No. 19. Brown topped second-place Syracuse (16:54.126) by almost four seconds and third-place Radcliffe (16:55.830) by over five seconds. Northeastern (16:59.350) and Penn (17:12.322) rounded out the top five.

Brown fielded three boats under the organization of the Friends of Brown Women's Crew with the Bears' top entry finishing in third place in the women's alumnae eight event.

Starting out of bow position No. 5 in event No. 15, Brown's A boat – which included Olympic gold medalist Tessa Gobbo '13 – clocked in with a time of 16:43.807 in a field of 45 entries. Brown's B boat placed 15th with a time of 18:17.838. Fat Cat (16:10.798) won the event while a boat of Michigan alumnae finished second (16:29.443)

In the women's master's eight event, Brown's entry came in 14th place out of 22 boats in event No. 25 with a time of 19:19.860 out of bow position No. 18. Toronto Sculling won the race behind a time of 17:33.492.

Brown continues competition at the Head of the Charles tomorrow with the women's championship four (2:02 p.m.) and the women's championship eight (2:36 p.m.).
