GOLD RIVER, Calif. – No. 1 Brown University women's crew posted a 14-2 overall record and won both of its races in the first and second varsity eights on day one at the Lake Natoma Invitational on Saturday at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
Racing against No. 12 Wisconsin and Loyola Marymount in the morning session, the Bears won the first varsity eight and second varsity eight races while taking second in the A varsity four.
Competing against No. 16 Iowa and Sacramento State in the afternoon, the Bears swept all three NCAA events – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and A varsity four.
In the B varsity four, Brown won its heat in the morning vs. No. 15 Gonzaga and No. 18 Notre Dame before placing second to No. 2 California in the grand final in the afternoon.
Next, Brown concludes racing at the Lake Natoma Invitational tomorrow with competition for Brown beginning at 11:20 a.m. ET.
Racing in the NCAA events vs. No. 12 Wisconsin and Loyola Marymount, No. 1 Brown won both the first varsity eight and second varsity eight races to highlight its Saturday morning at the Lake Natoma Invitational.
In the first varsity eight race, the Bears (6:20.30) clipped the Badgers (6:21.44) by 1.44 seconds and out-distanced the Lions (6:52.94) by over 30 seconds.
Brown won the second varsity eight race with a time of 6:30.48, beating Wisconsin (6:32.89) by 2.41 seconds and LMU (7:05.86) by over 35 seconds.
In its first race of the day, Brown (7:15.98) topped LMU (8:02.85) by over 45 seconds but fell to Wisconsin (7:07.81) by 8.17 seconds in the A varsity four.
Competing against No. 18 Notre Dame and No. 15 Gonzaga in a B varsity four heat, Brown earned first place with a time of 7:18.22, defeating the Fighting Irish (7:28.80) by 10.58 seconds and the Bulldogs (7:41.59) by over 23 seconds.
No. 1 Brown swept the NCAA events in its afternoon session at the LNI, competing against No. 16 Iowa and Sacramento State in those three races.
In the first varsity eight, Brown took first behind a time of 6:29.45, edging Iowa (6:32.77) by 3.32 seconds and Sac St. (8:11.23) by over 41 seconds.
Brown's second varsity eight won its race with a time of 6:41.52, clocking in 3.21 seconds prior to the Hawkeyes (6:44.73) and over 26 seconds prior to Sac St. (7:08.32).
Opening the afternoon session with the A varsity four, Brown (7:25.25) crossed the finish 22.99 seconds ahead of Iowa (7:48.24) and over 43 seconds ahead of Sac St. (8:09.05).
In the B varsity four grand final, the Bears finished second with a time of 7:24.91, besting Notre Dame (7:28.17) by 3.26 seconds and falling to No. 2 Cal by 12.55 seconds.
