CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's crew won the Women's Club Eight event and set a course record on the first day of the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday afternoon on the Charles River.
In event 19, the team's only race of the day, the Bears earned first place behind a time of 16:09.902 in a field of 34 boats, eclisping the previous course record of 16:41 which was set last year. Brown gained a 37.60-second edge over second-place Massachusetts (16:47.500).
Brown held a five-second lead at the first split, a 17-second advantage at the second split, and a 30-second edge at the third split.
Riverside Boat Club (16:52.236), Radcliffe Crew (16:57.124), and Duke (16:58.936) rounded out the race's top-five finishers.
The Bears continue racing at the Head of the Charles tomorrow with an entry in the Women's Championship Four at 1:51 p.m. and two boats in the Women's Championship Eight at 2:18 p.m.
