WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Brown women's crew sophomore Emma Betuel (East Hampton, N.Y.) and freshman Alia Shafi (Lafayette, Calif.) will represent the United States in the lightweight quadruple at the 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 23-27 in Varese, Italy after qualifying at the National Trials this week.
Betuel and Shafi will look to help the United States claim a gold medal for the third year in a row. In 2013, Brown junior Coco Schoeller (West Palm Beach, Fla.) paced the United States to a first-place finish in the varsity eight in Linz, Austria. The United States U23 women seek their first gold ever in the LW4x after coming in second place when the LW4x was added to the regatta in 2009.
Tuesday's victory punched Betuel's and Shafi's ticket to Italy as they represented California Rowing Club, clocking in at 6:59.57 over Vesper Boat Club for the win.
More than 100 entries from 37 clubs across the country have come to compete this week for a chance to row for the U.S. teams at either the World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 23-27, in Varese, Italy, and the 2014 World Rowing Championships August 24-31 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
