West Windsor, N.J. – On Championship Sunday at Lake Mercer, the Brown University Women's Crew finished 14th overall at the 2012 NCAA Division I Regatta. The Bears totaled 25 team points with its second varsity eight boat finishing third in the petite final, the varsity eight taking bronze in the third level final and the varsity four earning second in its third final. It was the 16th-consecutive season that the Bears advanced to the NCAA Championship.
In the first race of the day for Brown, the varsity four boat found itself in a close contest with Stanford, USC and Michigan St. The Cardinal took an early lead, but both the Spartans and Bears were able to stay within a half-length, with the Trojans trailing by open water. Bruno closed in on Stanford at the halfway point as all four crews continued to battle until the 1,500-meter mark. In the end it was an impressive late surge from USC that sealed the win as Brown finished second with a time of 7:33.35, just over a head second behind the Trojans.
Brown competed in the Petite Final of the second varsity eight, taking on two teams which finished in the top seven at the 2012 National Championship. The Bears were not able to overcome the speed of USC and Washington, but in photo finish with Wisconsin, Bruno was able to edge out the Badgers by four tenths of a second, finishing third at 6:45.81.
In the third final of the varsity eight, Brown was once again involved in a tight race as Wisconsin, Michigan St. and Notre Dame were all hot on each others bows for much of the contest. The Badgers were able to pull away from the pack at the end, while MSU and Bruno went back and forth until the Spartans found the advantage in the final 250 meters as the Bears finished third in 6:38.32.
