West Windsor, N.J. – The Brown women's crew second varsity boat was in action on Saturday morning at the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Crew Championship on Lake Mercer, and was involved in one of closest finishes of the tournament thus far. California, Princeton, Virginia and Brown all finished within four seconds of each other as the Bears placed fourth to move on to the Petite Final on Championship Sunday.
Brown's junior varsity boat was right with the pack as the race started but challenged first-place Cal at the mid-way point. Princeton and Virginia joined the fracas by the 1,750-meter mark as all four schools raced feverously toward the finish.
In the end the Golden Bears were able to hang on for the win as the Tigers raced ahead to take second. The Cavaliers also used late speed to push ahead of the Bears, edging Bruno by just under a second, sending Brown to the petitie finale.
Brown will have three races on the final day of competition on Sunday, May 27. The Bears' JV competes in the Division I Petite Final at 10:55 a.m. The varsity four will take part in the third level final at 9:50 a.m., while the varsity eight boat will race in the third final at 11:30 a.m.
