No. 6 Brown Sprints Past URI and BU

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rowing for just the second time in competition on its home course this year, Brown women's crew sprinted past area rivals Rhode Island and Boston University. The No. 6 Bears won every race of the day, including a 19 second win by the varsity eight.

The third varsity boat was scheduled to start the days races, but a broken oar in the Brown boat forced the varsity eight to start it off. The top Bear boat was unfazed by the schedule change and led from beginning to end, finishing in 6:12.20, 19 seconds ahead of second-place URI which edged out BU by less than two seconds.

Brown continued its impressive performances in the second varsity eight which also put in a time under 6:20. The 2V8 boat finished in 6:18.40. URI's second varsity actually posted a faster time than its varsity squad, crossing the line in 6:27.90.

Brown's varsity four was locked in a tight race with BU, but edged out the Terriers in the final 500 meters, finishing in 7:08.30. BU finished in 7:09.40.

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon beginning at 11:55 a.m., against Ivy League rivals Columbia and Cornell. It is the final home race of the 2011 season.
