BLOOMINGTON, IN -- The Brown women's basketball team dropped a 72-63 decision to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Championship game of the Holiday Inn/Fazoli's Classic, played at Indiana this weekend.
In a hard-fought first half dominated by both defenses, the Bears fell behind in the first seven minutes by an 8-0 count that they were never able to overcome. However, with the strong inside play of freshman Nyema Mitchell, who scored 8 in the first half, and the outside shooting of Tara Williams, who hit two threes in the final two minutes of the half, Brown pulled within five at the half.
Indiana used the strong inside-outside tandem of Anna Waugh, who scored 10 points, all in the second half, and Rainey Alting, to pull away late. However, Brown rallied back in the final two minutes of the half once again, as Rachael MacDonald caught fire, scoring 17 points in the second half while pulling down 9 boards in the game. The Bears also were a solid 15-of-19 from the free throw line, and cut the deficit to nine in the final minute of play. The loss dropped Brown to 2-2 on the season.
Brown guard Barbara Maloni finished with 12 points against the Hoosiers, and was named to the All-Tournament team. Mitchell also finished in double figures with 12, while Miranda Craigwell and Tara Williams each added eight.
The Bears, who defeated Belmont 78-62 on Friday night in the first round of the tournament, will play in their home opener on Wednesday, hosting Manhattan. They will host the BankRI/Brown Classic next weekend, playing host to Canisius, Butler and Davidson.
