The Brown women's basketball team will opn up the 2004-05 season on Friday when it hosts Temple at the Pizzitola Center. Last season Brown finished in a tie for second place in the Ivy League with a 16-12 overall and 9-5 Ivy record. This season the Bears were picked to finish fourth in the Ivy Pre-Season Poll. Head Coach Jean Marie Burr, who is entering her 17th year, returns a strong core of talented players, headlined by senior Holly Robertson along with juniors Sarah Hayes and Colleen Kelly.
Temple is coming off its second Atlantic 10 Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years. The Lady Owls finished with a 21-10 overall and 14-2 conference mark. Head Coach Dawn Staley's squad is the pre-season favorite to win the Atlantic 10 East crown once again. Three veterans, seniors Cynthia Jordan and Ari Moore, along with junior All-American candidate Candice Dupree, return for the Owls.
Brown is a perfect 2-0 against Temple with the Bears last win coming on Jan. 3, 1996. Brown defeated the Owls 72-68 in Philadelphia. The teams first meeting came in the 1992-93 season at the Florida International Fun & Sun Classic. Brown took a 65-51 decision in the championship game.
