DURHAM, NH -- The Brown women's basketball team dropped a 67-57 decision to the University of New Hampshire Wildcats in their season opener on Friday night.
The Wildcats opened up a 32-29 halftime lead, paced by the torrid shooting of Kim Kassik, who dropped 12 points in the first half, burying five of the six shots she took. But the Bears hung tough, rallying from an 8 point defict to pull within three at the break on the sharp of hand of sophomore guard Barbara Maloni, who scored 18 of her game-high 29 points in the first half.
In the second half, Brown got in foul trouble early, and the Wildcats' Anna Matthias took advantage of her opportunities from the foul line, scoring 13 of her team-high 23 from the line.
The Wildcats saw the Bears pull within one in the opening two minutes of the second half, but the Bears got into foul trouble and the Wildcats took advantage, opening as muhc as a 14-point margin with three minutes to go in the game.
Brown fought back though, pulling within eight in the final minute of play, but five Wildcat free throws in the last minute of play put the game away.
Maloni led the Bears with 29 points on 12-27 shooting, while freshman Tanara Golston added 8 points on 3-of-5 shooting. The Bears are back in action on Monday, when they face the Northeastern Huskies in Boston.
