Mitchell Named Rhode Island Division I Player of the Year

Brown senior forward Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) has been named the Rhode Island Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Year by the Rhode Island Basketball Media. An awards press conference was held on Tuesday, March 30 at The Radisson at the Airport Hotel to present the award winners. Mitchell is joined by Providence College First Team All-American Ryan Gomes as Rhode Island's Men's Player of the Year.
Mitchell was a First Team All-Ivy selection after leading the Bears to a second place finish in the Ivy League this season. She leaves Brown as its seventh all-time leading scorer with 1,248 points. Her 776 rebounds rank fifth all-time at Brown while her 211 blocks are third in school history.
She is the fourth player in school history to record over 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in their career. Her 15.5 points per game this season led the Bears and was seventh in the league. She ranked second in the league with 2.04 blocks per game and 12th in rebounding with 6.2 per game.
Her 1.67 steals per contest were also good for ninth in the Ivies. Mitchell ranked eighth in the league in field goal percentage with a 46.6% average. She broke the school record for games played in a career, playing in her 107th game in the Bears' final game of the season.
