Philadelphia, PA - Senior Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds during the Brown women's basketball team's (2-24, 1-11) 56-45 loss to the University of Pennsylvania Quakers on Saturday evening at The Palestra.
Penn jumped on the Bears early, taking a 10-0 lead after the first four minutes of play. But Bruno clawed back after an O'Neal three, bringing the Bears within one, 13-12, at the 11:14 mark.
Bruno took its first lead of the night with 7:35 remaining in the first stanza, after sophomore Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) grabbed a big rebound and kicked it up to O'Neal who hit a jumper from the right corner to put the score at 16-15.
Both teams traded buckets, as the game was tied at the four minute mark. Penn's Carrie Biemer drained a three, as the Quakers went on to sink four free-throws to gain a 28-26 lead heading into halftime.
Brown came within one at the beginning of the second half, but back-to-back three's pushed Princeton's lead to 38-31 with 13:34 on the clock. After a free-throw by Penn's Kim Adams, the Quakers gained a 49-39 lead with four minutes remaining in the game.
Penn kept picking apart the Bears' defense, scoring the next two baskets to gain a 53-39 lead. Freshman Sadiea Williams (Lunenberg, MA) broke Brown's four-minute scoring drought with a jump shot in the corner, as freshman Betsy Jacobson (Rochester, NY) drained one from the top of the key to bring Bruno within 10 with 1:32 left in the game. The Bears couldn't get any closer, as Penn sank three free-throws to end the game, 56-45.
Leading the Bears was Ann O'Neal with 14 points, followed by freshman Karly Grace (Camp Hill, PA) with seven. Penn featured three players in double-digit scoring, as Carrier Biemer tallied 16, Kelly Scott had 13, and Anca Popovic had 10.
The Bears will be back at home next weekend, as they host Harvard and Dartmouth in their final games of the 2007-08 season.
