Jan. 26, 2004
The Brown women's basketball team followed up its season sweep over Yale with a sweep of the Ivy League's weekly honors this week. Senior Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) was named the Player of the Week while freshman Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) garnered Rookie of the Week honors.
The two helped lead Brown to its sixth and seventh straight victories last week, including a 75-58 defeat over Ivy foe Yale on Saturday. Mitchell had a well-balanced day, contributing nine points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists. McAfee scored a career-high 12 points on 4-4 shooting, including 2-2 from behind the arc, and 2-2 from the foul line.
Mitchell had one of the best games of her career in the Bears 78-73 win at Lehigh last Tuesday. She tied her career-high of 26 points and six blocks along with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. McAfee tallied five key points and five huge offensive rebounds in the victory as well. Her break-away lay-up with 27 seconds left in the game helped seal the contest by giving Brown a three-point lead.
Mitchell leads Brown with 14.9 points per game. She is four points away from entering the top ten of Brown's all-time scoring list as she recently scored the 1,000th point of her career in the Bears' first match-up with Yale. McAfee leads all freshmen in scoring for Brown.
