Three of the Brown Women's Basketball Players finished in double digits as the Bears advanced to the Championship game of the 11th annual Bank RI Brown Classic. The Bears now 2-4 overall will face the University of Vermont at 3:00 p.m. in the Pizzitola Gymnasium. Brown defeated Lafayette College 71-50 as Vermont defeated Drexel 60-39.
The Bears were led by junior Tanara Golston (Skokie, IL) who recorded 18 points and three assists, shooting seven for nine from the field. Freshman Sarah Hayes (Beaufort, SC) tallied her first double double of the year with ten points and ten boards. Hayes also accumulated five assists in the win.
Brown junior Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) recorded 14 points and six boards as freshman Ashley Van Kurin (Yorba Linda, CA) contributed nine boards. Brown took the lead with a little less than eight minutes and never lost it to go into the Championship game.
Brown will face Vermont in the championship game who dominated their first round win over the Dragons. The Catamounts were led by junior Aaron Yantzi (St. Agatha, Ontario) who recorded a double double with 17 points and 12 boards. Also scoring in double digits for Vermont were senior Morgan Hall (Hanover, NH) with 12 and sophomore Lani Boardman (York, ME) who added ten.
The Lafayette College Leopards will face the Drexel University Dragons in the consolation game. The Leopards were led by junior Colleen Fitzpatrick (Springfield, PA) who netted 22 points and pulled down seven boards. Junior Kim Lucas (Gaithersburg, MD) led the way for the Dragons accumulating 11 points and three steals.
The consolation game will be at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow Sunday December 8, 2002 followed by the Championship game at 3:00 p.m. facing the Brown University Bears and the University of Vermont Catamounts.
