Providence, RI - In the first game of the Brown Bear Basketball Classic, the Brown women's basketball team (1-7) dropped a heart breaking 52-47 decision to Long Island University on Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Freshman Hannah Passafuime (Soquel, CA) led Brown's offense with 14 points, while sophomore Sadiea Williams (Lunenburg, MA) earned her first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bears came out with confidence in the first 20 minutes of play, shooting 42 percent from the field to take a 24-22 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. Sophomore forward Betsy Jacobson (Rochester, NY) and Williams led Brown with eight points a piece while Williams pulled down seven rebounds.
Brown took an immediate lead and remained in control of it until a three by Long Island gave the Blackbirds its first lead of the night, 15-11, at the 8:31 mark and a layup by Chelsey Johnson extended it to six, its largest lead of the half.
The Bears chipped away at its deficit as two free throws by Jacobson tie the game, 20-20, with 1:38 left in the stanza, but the Blackbirds answered right back with a lay-up from Ashley Palmer. But the Bears kept momentum on their side, with a lay-up from Passafuime and a free-throw by sophomore Sarah Delk (Atlanta, GA) to take a 24-22 lead at the end of the first half.
The lead continued to change throughout the second stanza, but junior forward Ashley Alexander (Houston, TX) checked in to the game with eight minutes left to score six consecutive points to give the squad a 43-40 lead with seven minutes remaining in the game.
However, a jumper by Long Island's Ashley Palmer's brought the Blackbirds within one, 45-44, with four minutes to go, but Passafuime answered right back with another lay-up to push Bruno's lead back up to three.
Palmer knocked in another jumper just under three minutes left and a three by Sprow gave the Blackbirds a two-point lead with 2:06 left in the game. A Brown turnover led to Long Island free throws, as Chelsi Johnson drained three down the stretch to earn the win.
The Blackbirds had three players in double-digit scoring, as Palmer led the squad with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Connie James added 12 to the scoring, while Johnson pitched in with 11.
Leading the Bears was Passafuime with 14 points and Williams with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior point guard Courtney Lee (Archer FL) picked up six steals and handed out five assists.
Long Island will play the University of Massachusetts at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow at the Pizzitola Sports Center, and the Bears will take on the University of Massachusetts at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday to conclude the Brown BEAR Basketball Classic.
