Providence, RI - Altough Natalie Bonds (Tavares, FL) had a career night with 14 points and nine rebounds, the Brown women's basketball team (1-9) lost to Boston University (6-3) at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Wednesday night.
Bonds sparked the Bears in the first half, netting 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds to help Brown gain a 10-point lead over the Terriers. BU chipped away at the deficit with a few jumpers, and went perfect from the free-throw line converting all nine.
Lay-ups by sophomore Courtney Lee (Archer, FL) and Annesley O'Neal (Franklin, GA) pushed the score to 19-13 with 13 minutes in the half, but BU's Kasey Devine scored 11 of her 16 points to bring the Terriers within one heading into the locker room at halftime.
With a 23-22 lead at the half, BU shot down Brown's attack and took over the game. Corrine Jean hit back-to-back three pointers, and Aly Hinton hit four free throws to put the score at 34-29 with 15:38 left on the clock. Brown brought its deficit back to two with a lay-up and a free throw by Bonds, and a free throw by sophomore Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA), but the Bears were then held scoreless while BU made its run.
Freshman Sarah Delk (Atlanta, GA) broke the silence with a three, but the stingy Terrier defense stopped the Bears again as they went on a 15-0 run, pulling ahead 57-36 with just under three minutes left in the game.
Bonds was Brown's leading scorer with 14 points and nine rebounds, followed by Delk's eight points and eight rebounds. Brown's Lee also handed out three assists and also had two steals. BU's Devine netted 16 and had 10 rebounds, while Aly Hinton ended with 12 points.
Brown is back in action against Lehigh on Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Christmas City Classic in Bethlehem, PA.
