Dec. 3, 2006

Final Stats

Providence, RI - Led by senior Ashley King-Bischof's (Pleasanton, CA) 17 points and eight rebounds, the Brown women's basketball team (2-7) defeated the University of Rhode Island (1-8), 66-62, in the consolation game of the 15th annual Brown Basketball Classic on Sunday afternoon. King-Bischof was named to the Brown Classic All-Tournament team.

Brown went into the locker room with the momentum on its side, as they held a 30-27 edge over the Rams. Freshman guard Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA) was leading the team in scoring with nine points and five rebounds. Fitzpatrick, who received her second start of the season and was averaging 13 minutes per game, played 39 minutes in today's competition and netted a career-high 16 points and eight rebounds.

But Fitzpatrick wasn't the only freshman that sparked the Bears in the victory over in-state rival, URI. Lindsay Walls (Santa Cruz, CA) also posted a career-high 11 points and five rebounds as well. She was 5-8 from the field and 1-2 from the charity stripe.

The Bears couldn't hold onto their lead long after half-time, and themselves down by nine points with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Despite it being Brown's biggest deficits, King-Bischof, Walls, and Fitzpatrick were able to help the Bears claw their way back into the game.

After King-Bischof hit a three to spark the team, Walls hit a turn-around jumper in the paint that tied the game up 53-53 with 3:52 remaining on the clock. Walls got after it again as she then grabbed a Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) miss in Brown's next possession and converted it for two more.

URI's Safi Mojidi, the Rams leading scorer with 16 points, missed a three-pointer that was rebounded by Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick kicked the ball up to King-Bischof who drove to the basket hard and put in a lay-up and converted the free-throw to put the Bears ahead 58-55 with 2:27 left, leading to an eventual Brown victory.

King-Bischof led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds, followed by Fitzpatrick's 16 points and eight rebounds. Also contributing was junior Annesley O'Neal with 13 points and five boards and Walls who finished with 11 points and five rebounds. The Bears shot 35 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Rams 47-31. Brown is back in action at Boston University on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
