Providence, RI - In the first game of the 15th annual Brown Basketball Classic, the Brown Bears (1-7) fell 72-63 to UC Davis (2-5). Brown will play the loser of the Syracuse and University of Rhode Island game at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Pizzitola Center.
Despite the loss, senior Lena McAfee (Reston, VA) recorded a double double as she lit up the board shooting 7-11 from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe. She had a total of 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Although UC Davis was shooting a phenomenal 53 percent from the field in the first half, the Bears were able to keep themselves in the game by out-rebounding the Aggies 21-11, as UC Davis headed into the locker room with a 33-23 edge.
The Bears cut the Aggies' lead to six after a few minutes into the second half after two quick buckets scored by senior Lena McAfee and then a turn-around jumper in the paint by freshman Shae Fitzpatrick (Lynnfield, MA).
However, the hot hands of Aggies' Heather Bates, Genevieve Costello and Laura Thomas, who combined for 47 points, brought the Bears' to their biggest deficit of the game, 61-48, with four minutes remaining in the second half.
The Bears, who have been struggling at the charity stripe this year, went 18-21 from the line and still dominated UC Davis on the boards 41-23 and the Bears grabbed 23 offensive opposed to the Aggies' four.
McAfee led the team in scoring with 19 points and 11 boards, followed by senior Ashley King-Bischof (Pleasanton, CA) with 10 points and seven boards. Sophomore Megan McCahill (Highlands Ranch, CO) chipped in nine points and had six rebounds.
