The Brown University Women's Basketball Team competed in the consolation round of the Dead River Company Classic in the Alfond Arena on the campus of Maine University today Saturday, November 30, 2002. The Bears faced the Bulldogs of Drake University and were defeated 75-67.
Brown came out slow, scoring early and then went without scoring a field goal in eight minutes. The Bulldogs went up by 14 at one point, but the Bears went on a run towards the end of the first half to cut the lead in half and go into the locker room down by only eight points 35-27. The Bears shot less than 25% in the first half compared to the Bulldogs who shot close to 40%, which was the only big difference in the first half. The two teams were matched evenly on field goal attempts, rebounds and turnovers.
The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half, but Brown matched them in points both scoring 40 in the second half. Brown junior Nyema Mitchell (Birmingham, AL) led the Bears with 25 points and. Sophomore Holly Robertson had another stand out game recording 11 points and ten boards. Junior Tanara Golston led the Bears in assists once again with seven, she also added eight points and two steals.
Freshmen Colleen Kelly (Rochester, NY) and Jackie Vocell (Atkinson, NH) were both hot from behind the three point line as Kelly recorded 11 points, nine from the behind the arc, and Vocell accumulated eight points, six from behind the arc. Kelly also added eleven boards for her first double double collegiate performance.
Brown came off a 60-51 loss to host team Maine, in which Brown committed 32 turnovers and shot only 25% in the first half. Brown turned it on towards the end of the second half overcoming a thirteen point deficit to pull within three with four minutes left, but excellent foul shooting raised the Bulldogs lead to nine as time ran out. The Bulldogs came off a tough 63-56 to Montana University after defeating #18 Iowa State by two Wednesday, November 27.
