Bears' Fall To Rhode Island, 75-71

Kingston, RI - The Brown women's basketball team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 75-71 loss to Rhode Island in the first day of the Rams' Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday. The Bears jumped out to a nine point lead in the first half but could not contend with the Rams' Tanya Rhodes and Safi Mojidi, who combined for 43 points. Brown chipped the lead down to two in the final seconds but a pair of free throws and a steal sealed the victory for Rhode Island. Senior Colleen Kelly led Brown with 18 points while junior Ashley King-Bischof added 17 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Amy Ehrhart was impressive in her collegiate debut, tallying 12 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
Hot shooting opened up a nine point lead in the first half for the Bears as King-Bischof scored seven straight points to begin the game and Kelly went on to knock down four three-pointers.
Trailing 26-17 with 7:58 left to play, the Rams mounted a comeback, taking advantage of several Brown turnovers with a 9-0 run. A lay-up by Tonya Rhodes with 5:07 left in the half gave Rhode Island its first lead of the game, 28-26.
A three by Safi Mojidi extended the Rams lead to five with 2:10 left but four straight points by freshman Megan McCahill brought it back to one. Rhode Island hit three of four free throws down the stretch, heading into the locker room with a 40-38 lead.
Kelly led Brown with 14 first half points off 5-9 shooting, including 4-5 from downtown. King-Bischof was a force in the paint, adding seven points and five rebounds in the half. Rhodes led the Rams' attack with 16 first half points.
The lead changed hands four times in the opening minutes of the second half before Rhode Island settled into an offensive groove. Back-to-back three's and a lay-up by Mojidi gave the Rams an 11 point edge, 59-48, with 12:16 left to play.
The freshman duo of Ehrhart and Megan McCahill gave the Bears some much needed stability in the paint, combining for seven points during a three minute span. Ehrhart's lay-up followed by another three by Kelly made it a 67-64 contest with 6:59 left.
Two straight turnovers by the Rams led to a jumper in the corner by sophomore Annesley O'Neal, which made it a one-point game, 67-66, with 5:18 left. The Rams clung to a narrow lead with under a minute left as King-Bischof three with 1:22 left fell short. A key steal by Hayes, who scored 12 points in the loss, with 24 seconds left tightened the lead to just two, 73-71, but Rhode Island was able to ice the victory with a pair of free throws by Justine Boisvert and a steal by Rhodes with four seconds left.
Brown will play the loser of the Villanova/Mississippi game, tomorrow at 12 noon.
